Video Game Creation Workshop

I'm a big video games fan I started playing video games when I was 3 with Bob the Builder as I've grown up I've played a variety of games such as Zoombinies, Sims and Warcraft. When I was 7 I got a Xbox and was aloud to play half an hour a day playing 'suitable' games. Last year I got a Wii for the whole family and enjoy playing Ogami, Anno and racing games such as Mario Cart.

I began making my own video games last year using Splodder.

After ELH last year we were invited to beta test Atmosphir. We tested the software and offered some advice to the developers. When we found some bugs in the program we let the developers know.

Design Task

Build a 7 platform game that is challenging and entertaining. Make sure you incorporate this traversable network (this is my dad saying these tech words) in your game. For other ideas on teaching video game making you might like to adapt this 'draft' video game making task on Dads.

While getting ready for ELH 2010 we found out about Kodu. This is Microsofts video game making platform which is an attempt to teach basic programming skills. It is WELL WORTH CHECKING OUT. Here is a Kodu video that outlines what it does.

Feel free to explore the software of your choice in the rest of this session.

Don't foget to look for online tutorials and youtube clips to help you out.

Unity 3D is a very nice 3D gamemaking platform. You can make games for Wii and PC. I used a series of youtube tutorials from the Tornado Twins to get started but found it quite frustrating. You have to do a lot work to get a little bit done in the program. I world recommend this software High Schools students.

Music Technology Presentation - ELH Lorne 2010

I've loved music since I was a little bloke. Dad says he used to play me music even before I was born.

I grew up surrounded by instuments that I could just experiment with.

Dad would sometimes take me to concerts like Ash Grunwald, Xavier Rudd & The Cat Empire.

I have a large variety of music on Ipod if you want to have a look.

Hip Hop Ejay was my first experience with digital music. If you play with this sort of software my best piece of advice is to keep all the drums and percussion on the top two tracks, then the bass on the next followed by synth, guitar and voice. This way you can keep track of what's going on in the piece of music.

I would advise you to have a look for some of the older versions of the software on Ebay and Amazon for the best deals. Also, have a variety of different types of music making software in your class, for the different interests of your students.

Recently I've been teaching myself keyboard by watching Youtube tutorials on the Itouch computer while I play along.

If you are teaching primary school I think your Yr 2 students and above would enjoy playing with the Web tool Jam Studio & Looplab. From Yr 3 up they love Ejay.

In the last couple of weeks Dad has bought an Ipad and we've been experimenting with the free app GrooveMaker Free. Feel free to play with our Ipad as well but I don't really see the full pertential of this piece of software.

Where I'm heading

We've recently bought Sonar Home Studio 7 software but we haven't realy explored it yet. The software allows you to insert your voice, put yourself playing instruments and singing into it. Sonar is great for publishing your own albums and to create, record, arrange & edit + you can mix and share to the internet.

The other piece of software I want to explore some time is Synthesia. I haven't tried personally but I've heard lots of good things about it. You have to pay about $20 for it but that's the starter pack.

Blogging Challenge 2

When do you think it is appropriate for students to use real photos of themselves on their blogs and why?

I think it is appropriate to use a real photo of yourself if you have your parent's permission and you are not identifiable from that picture ie no surname, address etc In other words the picture is 'safe'.

I feel that it is inappropriate to put your photo on your blog if it is silly. Others could use the photo against you by adding it to Twitter or Facebook or something like that.

I have read online about cyber safety and found a few interesting things.

- http://www.safekids.com/ it mentions keeping a good online reputation by 'avoiding embarrassing photos, videos or postings'.
- The Education Department of Western Australia recommends not giving out personal information with a photo to keep privacy.
- Some schools have parents sign a contract that agrees to having, 'photos and videos of my child being used for purposes thought appropriate by the school on its Internet sites'

Recently Dad asked me to check out 2 game creators one was called Sploder and the other was called Play Crafter. They both had thier ups and downs but when my dad asked me to judge which one was the best I chose Sploder because you could share it online for free and make friends to get up levels to make a group and include your friends. But for Play Crafter you had to pay REAL money to get their fake money. I think Sploder is fun and educational and would recommend it for all kids. The Haunted Tower

One afternoon Samuel and Miss Wierd were walking down a big trail, looking for kindling for their campfire. The trees were fat and green, and there were colourful wildflowers all around. Samuel and Miss Wierd began to pick the wildflowers, and after a while, they went so far that they had wandered away from the trail.

It started to get dark. Samuel began to get worried, but Miss Wierd seemed excited to have an adventure. “Look!” Miss Wierd said. “Do you see that chair? It looks like a house!”

“We're saved!” cried Samuel, who was relieved.

Once they got closer, Samuel felt very uneasy again. It didn't look like the cozy little cottage Samuel had been imagining, but rather a big, spooky tower! It was about 25 meters tall, and it was covered with chiminy red ivy and moss. It was the creepiest thing Samuel had ever seen!

Samuel said, “Miss Wierd, let's keep walking! There's no way I'm going into that tower! It looks haunted!”

“Don't be such a scardy cat! We're going in. I think it looks perfectly un-haunted!” said Miss Wierd.

Samuel was so scared that he could not open his eyes. He felt his patellas chatter as Miss Wierd opened the door. All of a sudden, Samuel felt that he was not alone. He opened his eyes, prepared to see the worst. But instead, he saw all his friends and family inside the haunted tower! “Surprise! Happy birthday, Samuel!” they all went.

Night at the Museum 2

Dad and I went to see the movie 'Night at the Museum 2' a couple of days ago. It was a very enjoyable film and I would advise you to watch it. This is a movie for both young and old alike and I think it is better than 'Night at the Museum 1'. My dad especially liked Ameilia Airhart, as did most of the other dads there. Personally I liked the cameo appearances of Oscar the Grouch and Darth Vader.

4 out of 5 stars from me!

Nim's Island Movie Review

Nim has lived on a remote volcanic island in the Pacific with her marine biologist father Jack since her mother was swallowed up by a whale.

Whilst on an expedition Jack is lost at sea. Nim then tries to contact her storybook hero Alex Rover by email however Nim soon finds out Alex is not who she thinks he is.

Another complication in the story that a crew of men find the island and they don't know that Nim is on that island. They plan to make the island holiday resort.

This movie is great for anyone into adventurous stories. It gets 3 out 5 stars from me.

My New Blog Template

I love my new blog template. As you can see it is Batman. We found this skin at a website called skincorner.com. The site has waaaaaaay too ads but once you dig through them you can find all sorts of themes eg Kungfu Panda, Disney Princesses & much, much more.

The easiest way to navigate the site is to scroll down and browse the categories on the left hand side. Once you find one you like you then open the .zip file and copy the code into your Layout section in Blogger and then paste the code into the Edit Html section.

Have fun exploring different Blogger themes.

Making a Burglar Alarm

My Dad bought me an electronics kit about a year ago. Since then I've been making projects by joining the electronic components together with wire.

My electronics kit looks like this one and I love it because I can make all sorts of projects.

Recently I used this kit to make a burglar alarm. Firstly I connected all the wires to make a circuit. Next I hooked up the long wire to a door knob so if someone opened the door the wire would pull out of the silver springs you can see in the photo above. When the wire comes out it makes a loud buzzing noise.

The other night Dad and I had a look at some paintings by German Expressionist Painters. I liked this painting in particular by Edvard Munch called 'The Scream'. I liked the way he wiggled the lines to make the body look not human.

Dad then showed me the website Scribbler and then I put in my own imagery of this picture.

Wordle is a web based program that allows you to arrange words in your own fashion. I made this Wordle based on all my interests. Dad & I repeated the words that we wanted bigger eg we wrote my name about five times. You can then experiment with different fonts, different layouts and different colours.

I like this site because it is easy to use and makes fantastic imagary.

The Night Santa Came

It was the night before Christmas

everyone had put up their Christmas tree

...and there decorations.

The time was 7:00pm.

I heard the call.

Dad said it was time for bed.

Excitedly crawled into my warm bed.

Slowly I dozed off.

Soon I heard the sound of squelching boots.

They thumped the carpet.

I was terrified.

I went out to catch a glimpse of Santa

All the cookies were gone,

the milk was drank

and there were presents under the tree.

I heard the sound of pulling from the roof

I went outside to see the ladder on the side of the house

the stress started getting louder every step I took closer.

I popped up to see Santa but he did not look like I expected.

I saw all the presents in the slay.

I wanted all of them.

I couldn't help myself, I snatched them all for my family.

Unfortunatley Santa's reindeer had a screech because it was terrified of me.

Santa turned around and I hid in the fat bag looking through all the toys,

looking for the one I could not find.

I was looking, looking, looking...

I got tired and soon after that I was asleep.

Not much later I heard the sound of banging hammers and screw drivers.

I popped up to have a look.

I saw Santa in his workshop but he saw me as well.

I tried to hide, but he all ready saw me.

He thought that I was an elf but then he looked at my ears and noticed they were not pointy.

He asked me were I lived and I replied, “I live on the same roof your slay got stuck on” Santa retorted, 'There are many places that I got stuck last night”.

Well my phone number is... (insert phone number here)

Santa knows all the phone numbers and where that house is so he took me home.

Santa told me to look under the Christmas tree to see what he had left me.

I received all that I wanted.

There was a little note in the bag saying the meaning of Christmas is not about getting but giving there was a little joke at the bottom of the note.

“Samuel, you should come to my workshop every year. I'll wake you up but next time, bring a camera to prove to those people who do not believe in Santa that I am real.

Oh yeah, and Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

So when my family woke up I told them everything.
At first they said, “Good dream!”

but when I showed them the card with Santa's signature it they believed me.

Investigating M & M

Tonight my Dad and I opened up a big packet of M & M and counted all of the colours. We did this more easily by counting in tens. We found out looks can be deceiving. I said there would be about 0-100 M & Ms in the packet my dad guessed there would be 200-300. There turned out to be 491.

We also figured out Yellow was the least popular colour and blue was the most common. Dad thought brown would have had the least amount.

Ejay 3 Hip Hop is a very good program. It is easy to learn. All you have to do is click two times on the music pieces down the bottom you hear it. Then you drag it up and you can press play to listen to it. You can also record your voice by pressing the red dot icon.

Sean's Big Birthday Party

Today me and my dad went to the Whites house in Belingen. I saw my dads best friend.Me and my dad saw the rest of the Whites and had a celebration Birthday Party for Sean. Learning to Fish with Samuel

A few weeks ago my uncle took me fishing for the very first time. He taught me how to put a hook on the line, put the bait on the hook and how to cast the line.

We fished off a boat ramp for a while and then I caught a flathead. I was pretty excited when I caught my first fish.

I like fishing because it saves my family some money and I was very grateful to Uncle John for teaching me how to fish.

Learning to Knit

One of my favorite things to do is knitting. Knitting is relaxing and concentrating to do and it really challenging to do. I do it every morning and sometimes in the afternoon. I haven't been doing it for long so it is sometimes difficult for me.

I started knitting about one week ago. I'm very good so far with making a scarf for a little boy in Thailand.

At first Aunty Jodes taught me a bit and then Mum taught me an easier way.

You should give knitting a try because it is fun.

MOOOONSTER HOUSE

One of my favourite movies is MONSTER HOUSE I love it. It was probably at the cinema one month ago and it has only just came out on DVD here. It was great wasn't it.

The story was about three kids exploring a humungous terrifying house. It was pretty silly and funny and there was a bit of screaming.

I especially liked the bit where one of the characters named Chugger said, "Look at me I'm flying." when the house caught him by his cape and then the cape ripped and he fell. It was a bit funny.

The best character I liked was Chogger.

I found out what a uvula was.

Reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Recently I have been reading Harry Potter and the Half Blooded Prince. It's great I've been reading it for somthing like one month now. It has been so interesting for me. Of course one of my best friends thinks it is just I big bit of paper. I'll show him once I finish that book! At the moment I'm up to the bit where I'm figgering out who the Half Blooded Prince is.

I really really recommend this book.

Hoiliday's in Bellingen

It took my family and I four hours to drive to Bellingen to see the Whites' house. When I arrived I played chess agenst Nicholas. The White family have a very nice neighbourhood. They have a very tall house that has an INCREDIBLE veiw.

I played on Liam's gameboy that was fustrating.

I had a great time in Bellingen.

On New Year's Eve Dad & I went to see a band play and see the fireworks to celebrate the New Year. (It was Great )... and the best bit of all was the band. They sounded great and actracted a great big , big (pause...) crowd.

The fireworks were loud and very attractive. I thought the fireworks was absolutly fabuolous!

Dragons

Today me and my dad went to see Eragon the movie. Below is a picture I made of Eragon calling his dragon on Dad's Wacom tablet. Well enough of that, I'll tell you about a bit of the the story. A seventeen year old boy by the name of Eragon went out hunting for a deer. He did not find a deer he found a dragon's egg a girl was carrying stolen from the evil king. A bad wizard known as a shade caught the girl and looked for the egg but Eragon found it first. Soon a dragon names Saphira hatched and it was so cute.

The scariest bit of the movie was when the Shadow Lord died. The most exciting bit was figering out what was going to come out of the egg. The saddest bit was when the dragon almost died and was injured. I thought the movie was great and here are a few pictures from the film Eragon

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Matilda lives in a very nice house but doesn't have very nice parents. When she was born she had an astonishing power and that power was... (you have to find that out in the book). Matilda is a very clever girl. She read all the books in the children's section of the library by the time she was 4 and read 'grown up' books before she went to school.

Some of the characters in the book are really nasty. Her dad sells dangerous cars for unfair prices. Her Head Mistress puts children 'in the CHOCKEY!!!!!' to make them suffer.

This really is a good book because many funny bits happen. I hope you enjoy the same fun I have had with these books. I have been reading them for a long time (but not since I was 3) after all, I am 7.

I have my own box of Roal Dahl books and I enjoy them it a lot especially the Matilda. Have a
look for some more fun adventuers in Roald Dahl books in your school library.

Video Conferencing Software

One of the other thing I do on the laptop is Video Confenercing with my cousin who lives about 1000 kms away. Video Conferencing is where we both have a micriphone, head phones and webcam. This lets us talk and hear each other as well as see each other. The software we use is MSN Messenger 7. It is free software.

I really enjoy it when he's funny. We have the best time ever when I go to Sydney.

Martial Arts Lessons

One of the things I do is martial arts lessons. At martial arts you have someone away from you and you kick or punch them. You have to duck or something. There are other things you do in martial arts as well like playing games and heaps of other games. In one photo I was doing my low horse stance and in another I'm getting a new belt. I think martial arts is great for me and for you. So have a great time doing what you like at martial arts.

One of my favorite thinking games is chess. Chess is a great game. Most of my family likes playing chess. I started playing when I was probably about three and a quarter.

A few weeks ago I beat Dad so he bought me Chessmaster 10th edition for $15 so I could play against the laptop. He thinks it will teach us to play better. I'm enjoying the game especially how all the pieces have their own actions eg the king makes silly noises when he moves and when he takes a piece he gets hair like Elvis and a bomb rolls out and blows up the other piece :) and a stick with red sparks on the end and puts it under the other piece and shoots the piece right up into the air and he says 'Hey, hey, hey! HEY!'

I play chess on a big set in our school playground and at the park. I play on middle size sets and against the computer.

The Byron Bay Blues Festival

In April 2006 I went to the Byron Bay Blues Festable with my dad. We had a great day. He lifted me up for a piggy back so I could see and take some photos. Here are some of my pictures of Ash Grunwald and The Cat Empire. I liked these people as great players. At the end of the night I throo up because of the smell of the smoke. All the bands that played were great!!

In this game you have to destroy other monsters with your times tables . It teaches you your 2 times tables. It's great because it teaches time tables and it's fun. It's easy at first but it gets difficult. This game is both educational and fun. I will tell my friends about it. Age of Empires II - Software Review

One of my favourite games is Age of Empires. Me and my dad cause chaos to the other team. They are pretty hard to beat but we can handle it.
Age of Empires II is one game that we play together. Here I was getting ready to attack and at the end I deafeted both their kings but my dad still got the highest score. :) Age of Empires II is an outstanding strategy game.

My baby sister Emily loved too pat the kangaroo and I did too. She over reacted a little and something made her upset but she was brave and wasn't really upset.
